What does it mean when you are "hooking up"? Is it just dating or is it ?

I was watching The Hills and Laguna Beach for the first time a few days ago and they were always talking about "hooking up". I know it may seem like a stupid question to many of you I really don't know what pretense their talking about it in so I thought I'd ask.
