Why did many formerly colonized peoples migrate to the nation of their former colonial masters?

Taking the case of the West Indies, the people there had been taught at school that the UK was a land of golden opportunity and they considered themselves to be British. Any of those islands tends to offer limited prospects, so the appeal of emigrating was considerable.
