Why is smoking stereotyped as something people do to feel cool and to fit in? Also answer if you know diff?

Surely it's understood that it's only a slight part of the story and that there are many other reasons for why people smoke. So, why is it a regular instant jump to conclusion, especially when it's a youngster?
